Covering up to 1990 sq km Udzungwa National Park contains the greatest altitudinal range of forests in East Africa. The national park is the only place in East Africa with unbroken forest cover from lowland forest communities at below 250m above sea level. Udzungwa national park is bordered by the Great Ruaha River to the north, Mikumi National Park and Selous Game Reserve located further to the north and east.
The national park is a great source of water for a large number of endemic species of both animals and plants. The park is home to number of primates out of which colobus and Sanje Crested Mangabey are the rarest which can be spotted only in Udzungwa National Park. Tanzania’s best-kept secret, the Udzungwa National park has the vote of confidence after recognition as World Biodiversity Hotspot, and an Ecoregion of Global Critical Importance by World Wildlife Fund. To her legion of fans, she is the “African Galapagos”.
Udzungwa is the largest and most biodiverse of a chain of a dozen large forest-swathed mountains that rise majestically from the flat coastal scrub of eastern Tanzania.
Udzungwa is accessible by bus and train. But the bus option is more cumbersome and requires a lot of planning and luck to go with the change of buses at multiple junctions.
The Tazara trains are more convenient as they run every Tuesday and Friday afternoon from Tazara train station in Dar to Mang’ula, the town closest to the park. After that, it’s just a 30-minute drive to the park headquarters.
